10 Best Matcha Spots In London
Chosen for quality, craft and how they actually make it.
Matcha has officially moved beyond trend status. In London, it’s no longer just a coffee alternative or an aesthetic upgrade. It’s a daily ritual. But as matcha’s popularity has grown, so too has the variation in quality.
Grassy, bitter, overly sweet or suspiciously pale matcha usually comes down to one thing: poor sourcing or poor preparation.
So we set out to find the places doing it properly.
How we chose these matcha spots
(and what to look for in a good matcha)
Yes, we did ask to see the matcha packet before we ordered.
And yes, we were absolutely leaning over the counter to clock which milk they were using, because a good matcha is rarely an accident.
When it’s done properly, it’s smooth, vibrant and quietly energising. When it’s not, it’s grassy, bitter or suspiciously sweet. We’ve all been in the coffee shop excited when the menu says ‘matcha’ to be served a glass of milk with a tint of green. The difference usually comes down to details most menus don’t bother to explain: the grade and origin of the tea, how it’s stored, water temperature, whether it’s actually whisked by hand, and how thoughtfully the milk is chosen and textured.
So we approached this list with the same intention we would if we were to be making it at home.
We looked for places using high-quality, preferably Japanese-sourced matcha, prepared with care rather than shortcuts. We paid attention to technique, balance and consistency. We favoured spots where the flavour stands on its own, without syrups or sugars doing the heavy lifting.
Because when matcha is made well, it doesn’t need embellishment. We’d know, we were drinking matcha before it became the cool-girl drink.
