The Liver Glow Up Guide for Spring
We have all felt that sudden, almost frantic urge to scrub the skirting boards, purge the wardrobe, and finally book that haircut we have been putting off since January. It is the first day of May, and while the rest of the world is talking about "spring cleaning" their homes, there is a deeper, more biological reset happening under the surface. As a women’s health specialist, I see this seasonal shift as more than just a cultural whim; it is a vital window for a physical and energetic reset. If you want to wake up this summer feeling vibrant and looking "snatched," the work actually begins now, in the depths of your liver.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spring is the season of the Liver and the Wood element. Think of a seed bursting through the soil with unapologetic force. The liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (energy) and blood throughout the body. When your Liver Qi is flowing, you feel creative, decisive, and vibrant. When it is stagnant, you feel irritable, sluggish, and, quite literally, dull. TCM wisdom teaches that the "liver opens into the eyes," referring to our capacity to see freshly and find curiosity in the familiar. But beyond the beautiful metaphors, there is a very real, scientific reason why supporting your liver in spring is the ultimate secret to a radiant glow.
The Biological Foundation of the Glow
To understand why liver health is the precursor to a summer glow up, we have to look at its role as the body’s primary filtration system. Your liver processes everything from environmental pollutants to the glass of wine you had at dinner. However, for women, its most critical role is hormone metabolism. A sluggish liver can lead to an accumulation of "spent" hormones, particularly oestrogen, which often manifests as skin congestion, hormonal breakouts, and that dreaded water retention.
When we talk about a "glow up," we are really talking about efficient detoxification and lymphatic flow. If your liver is overwhelmed, your skin (your largest organ of elimination) has to pick up the slack. This is why liver health and radiant skin are essentially two sides of the same coin. By supporting the liver’s detoxification pathways now, we prevent the internal "stagnation" that leads to a dull complexion and puffiness later.
Restorative Sleep: The Liver’s Golden Hour
This internal filtration doesn't happen at random; it follows a strict circadian rhythm. In the TCM body clock, the liver performs its most intensive restorative work between 1am and 3am. If your nervous system is in a state of high alert during this window, you are effectively sabotaging your body’s ability to detoxify. This is why quality sleep is the non-negotiable first step of any spring glow up.
To protect this golden hour, we must address the modern disruptors of our biological clock.
I recommend blocking blue light in the evening with red light glasses to signal to the brain that the sun has set, allowing melatonin to rise naturally. To further support this transition, I swear by magnesium glycinate before bed. Unlike other forms of magnesium, the glycinate version is highly bioavailable and helps reduce stress-induced sodium retention. This is the scientific secret to waking up looking defined and "snatched" rather than puffy. When we pair this with a warm Epsom salt bath, the magnesium sulphate helps pull toxins from the skin and relaxes the muscles, prepping the body for the deep repair it needs to radiate from within.
Movement and Lymphatic Drainage
Once we have supported the liver’s internal work through sleep, the next step is to ensure those toxins have a clear exit route. This is where the lymphatic system comes in. Unlike the circulatory system, the lymphatic system doesn't have a pump; it relies on movement and manual manipulation to shift fluid. This is why I prioritise a monthly lymphatic drainage massage or facial, my personal favourite spot is Oblique on Old Brompton Road, to move the fluid that carries waste away from the cells.

At home, you can achieve similar results with simple, gravity-assisted inversions like "legs up the wall" (Viparita Karani). This pose assists lymphatic drainage from the lower body and shifts the nervous system into a parasympathetic "rest and digest" state, which is essential for liver function. When it comes to active movement, the goal is consistency over intensity. High-stress workouts can actually be counterproductive if they spike cortisol too high for a taxed liver to process. Whether it is reformer, barre, or a session at Barry’s or 1Rebel, find a workout you love enough to do weekly. The "glow" comes from the consistent movement of Qi, not the occasional bout of exhaustion.
The External Edit: Space and Sun
As we clear the internal pathways, it is only natural that we feel the urge to clear our external environment as well. There is a profound psychological link between our physical space and our internal state. Purging your wardrobe of clothes you no longer wear is more than just "tidying"; it is an act of clearing stagnation. By simplifying your space, you reduce the mental load on your nervous system, which in turn supports your hormonal health.
This season, I have leaned into a "uniform" of high-quality, natural fibres: 100% cotton jeans and 100% wool cardigans. These materials are breathable and grounded, reflecting the "clean" energy we are cultivating internally. And as the days get longer, make time to soak in the sun whenever possible. Vitamin D is essential for hormonal balance, but ensure you are using a non-toxic sunscreen (I love the Caudalie one) to avoid adding a chemical burden back onto your liver just as you are trying to lighten it.
The Human Element of the Glow Up
Finally, we must remember that the ultimate goal of any wellness ritual is to enhance our lives, not to restrict them. While I advise against drinking coffee on an empty stomach, as the resulting cortisol spike is a stressor your liver doesn't need first thing in the morning, I also advise against obsessing over "wellness hacks" at the sacrifice of being human.
You are not a robot; you are a complex, cyclical being. The real "glow up" happens when you lean into your strengths and passions. Don’t miss out on a girls' night out because of a rigid 10pm bedtime. Emotional connection and joy are just as vital for your Liver Qi as any supplement or massage. When you are happy, authentic, and living in alignment with your natural rhythms, you don't just look better: you naturally glow. That is the real essence of spring: a smooth, effortless flow of becoming exactly who you are meant to be.
